Number 5 was Underwood at its best. Millions of these machines were used by secretaries, journalists, government officials and writers throughout the first half of the 20th century. Later, the Underwoods were superficially modernized, but retained the same basic mechanism. Some of these later typewriters were even named “No. 5” in honor of the model that made the company’s fortune.
