James Bartlett Hammond applied for a patent for the typewriter and hammer typewriter mechanism found in Hammond typewriters in 1879 and was granted patent number 224088 on February 3, 1880, and patent number 232402 on September 21, 1880. The Hammond Typewriter Company was founded and manufactured in 1880. He produced his first machine in 1884 and won a gold medal at the New Orleans Centennial Exhibition that same year. The Hammond Typewriter highlighted its superior strength and durability thanks to its unique writing shuttle and hammer writing mechanism. The interchangeable type shuttle also contributed to Hammond’s popularity with its ability to print a variety of typesets at a variety of sizes, including mathematical formulas, special symbols, and foreign characters by easily replacing the type shuttle or by an even simpler rotation of the type shuttle
